Access to clean drinking water is one of the most basic human needs. Surprisingly, it’s a need that many around the world struggle to meet. 1 in 8, or nearly a billion people lack access to clean water. Lack of clean water and sanitation accounts for more deaths than violence of any kind. 42,000 people die every week from illness related to unsafe drinking water – 90% of those are children under the age of 5.
I’m lucky enough to be be outraged about the materials used in my plastic water bottle. The United States drinks approximately 6.2 Billion gallons of bottled water every year. We’re lucky enough to be able to turn our taps on and see healthy safe water pour out – and we still choose to stock our refrigerators with a multitude of bottled waters.
