According to a new report from National Center on Family Homelessness, 1 in 50 children in the United States is homeless. This amounts to 1.5 million children will experience homelessness at some point during the year.  This data is circa 2006. The recession, and foreclosure boon will certainly increase the number of homeless kids out on the street. Though many of these homeless youth are runaways and victims of abuse, the number of homeless single mother’s is rising.

Statistics

  • 46 percent- The number of runaways who had been physically abused before running away from home.
  • 32 percent - The number of runaways who have been forced to participate in sexual activity against their will.
  • 47 percent – The number of runaways who leave because of a conflict with a parent or guardian.
  • 17 percent -The number of runaways who have dropped out of school.
  • 32 percent – The number of runaways who will try to kill themselves.
  • 5,000 – The number of runaway and homeless youths who die from assault, illness and suicide.

Stand Up for Kids

All profits from the sale of this shirt go to Stand Up For Kids. The organization was founded in 1990 by retired US Navy officer Richard L. Koca. Standup for Kids works with homeless and at risk youth under the age of 21. Through extensive volunteer coordinating, they strive to get youth into shelters while providing food and health & hygiene kits.
