The Arts

I’m an art nut. I love printmakers, painters, wacky sculpters, those kids on awkwardly tall bikes, folks who knit sock monkey dresses, and everyone inbetween.

The people that choose to incorporate the arts in their lives are some of the gutsy folks out there. It’s hard to turn away from the security of the traditional 9-5. I salute you all.

Kickstarter

Kickstarter is a very cool little resource for people running small projects – or with just a crazy idea in their head.  The basic premise is, people need some $ to pull off their big ideas.  Other people like to support people with big ideas. Let’s get the two groups together. It’s all or nothing [...]

Blind Pilot

I stumbled upon this great trailer for a documentary about indie folk pop band Blind Pilot this morning, and was utterly delighted. I popped over to itunes and grabbed their latest record without listening to a single preview, and after my third full listen in two days I’m happy to say it’s wonderful. They went on [...]

James White for Haiti

James White

James White

One of my favorite designers/visual artists, James White, is donating all the proceeds from his sales this week to the relief effort in Haiti. This is a great chance to pick up one of his pieces. This should be an example of how ordinary folks can continue to do their thing and make a positive impact.

Quick Review: Zeitoun

I just finished Zeitoun a few days ago, and it’s staying with me. Full disclosure: I’m an Eggers. I’ve read Heartbreaking Work, What is the What, and You Shall Know Our Velocity.  When my wife and I were in San Francisco recently we made sure to visit 826 Valencia - the definition of what a [...]

Ethical Fashion Forum

The industry that helped bring us sweatshops and fur pelts is getting a hand recreating itself from the Ethical Fashion Forum. They’re focused on promoting Social and Environmental sustainability within the fashion industry. It’s great to see an organization that is open to looking at a problem from multiple facets. Too many people gravitate towards [...]

National Youth Poetry Slam

Check out this crazy awesome video of some kids doing spoken word. Normally I'm iffy on teen poetry. Ok truth? I'm always iffy on teen poetry - but this stuff is pretty great.

The Lab

The Lab is fantastic youth arts and empowerment program being run out St. Paul Public Schools. It’s the brainchild of Mary Tinucci, a school social worker that is changing the way that we think about working with youth. The Lab began as The Poetry Lab, a writing program that Tinucci used to encourage students [...]

Burlesque of North America

You might think there’s nothing hip happening on the middle coast, but Burlesque of North America is here to prove you wrong. They’re a design, printing, art gallery owning collective out of NE Minneapolis. They’ve designed posters for most of the great bands making music right now. Their gallery First Amendment is home to [...]
