Nicholas Kristof Tells Us How to Save The World

Nicholas Krstiof has a fantastic article in Outside magazine on a new perspective we need to bring to our appeal for support.

Good people engaging in good causes sometimes feel too pure and sanctified to sink to something as manipulative as marketing, but the result has been that women have been raped when it could have been avoided and children have died of pneumonia unnecessarily—because those stories haven’t resonated with the public. So for God’s sake, let’s learn how we can connect people to important causes and galvanize a robust public reaction.

Websites for Nonprofits: Intro

I spend a lot of time scouring the web for cool organizations that do great work. Often, I’ll stumble across a site that looks like it’s a 2-person operation running out of the back of 86′ Honda Civic, only to discover that they have 45 employees and a 2 million dollar operating budget. On the [...]

How do you get inspired?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what inspires me. It wasn’t a conscious decision, but I’m noticing that I’ve surrounded myself with inspiring people. It seems that everywhere I look there is someone kicking off a small business, teaching today’s youth, or making beautiful art. That kind of creation makes me want to get [...]

First bit of press!

I got an amazing write up on the Shane & Peter blog today.  These guys are friends and co-workers, and all around wonderful people. Their blog is full of amazing insight into running a business or organization. So much of what I’ve learned I’ve sponged off of them.

War isn’t just casualties

There’s an interesting article on the ONE blog about some of the unmentioned effects that war has on a population. On average, child mortality rates have dropped across the globe. Sadly, there are some exceptions to this where they’ve actually increased. The article points out the obvious, but so rarely discussed side effect to conflict. War disrupts and displaces people. It makes it harder for kids to get food, clean water, and health care. Check out this post about the Central African Republic.

MIT developing clothes for abused women

This is a really interesting article about some design work being done at MIT. Though pretty impracticable at this stage, it’s fascinating to see people taking a radically abstract approach to addressing a problem like domestic abuse. We’re certainly not going to solve a problem like domestic abuse with design and technology – but I encourage this kind of thinking.

Quick Nocoast Recap

I’m still recuperating from a long Nocoast weekend, but I thought I would toss out a quick update. We raised just about $1000 for various charities and nonprofits on our first weekend! I’m ecstatic at how well we were received. Our posters for the Tree Trust and Family Tree Clinic were definitely our most popular [...]

NoCoast Day 1

Remakers had it’s first public outing today. Day 1 of NoCoast definitely gets slotted in the success category. We had an extremely long night getting prepped, so were pretty sleepy all day. The art fair was packed full of people.  We were lucky enough to nab a spot next Aisha Celia Designs, and Aesthetic Apparatus [...]
