Take the rest of the afternoon off and checkout 180 South. Normally I would wait until the film has been released to plug it – but there’s enough great content on their website now to give you a great afternoon distraction. The film intermingles contemporary interviews and footage with archival footage documenting the trip between two friends in 1968, and the journey of Jeff Johnson recreating the trip today.
It just so happens that one of the dudes from 1968 is Yvon Chouinard. Chouinard is one of my personal heroes. He’s the head and founder of Patagonia clothing company. If you don’t know anything about Patagonia’s business practices, or if you’re at all interested in Social Entrepreneurship I’d grab a copy of “Let My People Go Surfing.” The book recounts the evolution of Patagonia from a small climbing supply shop to the global brand that it is today. Chouinard managed to build an incredibly successful business in a socially and environmentally conscious way long before it was hip to do so.
Back to the film project. It looks beautiful. It seems like it’s got a healthy dose of implied environmental critique without being a issues film. Director Chris Malloy’s sun dappled imagery is making me anxious to get the heck out of dreary St. Paul and back to the beach. The film comes out in spring of 2010.
The film is produced by Woodshed Films. Definitely worth some more investigation.
